Toshogu Shrine was originally built at Kamiyama village \uff08now Kamiyama-cho\uff09 as the spiritual guardian of the land to the northeast of Goryokaku Fort when it was completed in 1864.At the same time,the meaning of the name “Kamiyama” was altered from “village which is located by the side of the mountain” to “village by the side of the mountain where a god dwells”.The shrine is dedicated to Tosho Daigongen separated from the Tojuin in Samani,Hidaka,which is a branch of Nikko Toshogu Shrine.
\nIn 1868,deserters from the former shogunate’s forces occupied Goryokaku Fort.The next year they hastily built Shiryokaku Fort to defend the area to the north of Goryokaku Fort and also a battery at Toshogu Shrine,which was strategically located between Goryokaku and Shiryokaku Forts.\uff08The battery was called Gongen Daiba.\uff09That same year,however,the battery was attacked by the new government forces and Toshogu Shrine was also burned down.
\nToshogu Shrine was moved to Tenyu-an \uff08presently Tenyu-ji Temple in Aoyagi-cho),and thence to Horai-cho in 1879.In 1991,it was finally moved here and its name was changed to Hokkaido Toshogu Shrine.
\nThe large torii,which was built by a stonemason who worked on the stone walls of Goryokaku Fort and Benten Battery,escaped damage during the Hakodate War and has remained here since.<\/p>\n
