\nDaienji Temple<\/p>\n
Daienji Temple,a branch of Shomyoji Temple of the jodo sect,is said to have been built in 1722.In 1742 a wooden statue of Amitabha Buddha was moved here from Shomyoji Temple.At that time the temple was named Muryoan.Later,in 1920,it was renamed Daienji Temple.
\nIn front of the gate there is “Muen Mound,” erected in 1864 in memory of the souls of those who died of illness or injury while engaged in the construction work of Goryokaku Fort \uff08which started in 1857 and completed in 1864\uff09.The names of Chief Kizaburo and all of his men are inscribed on the back of the monument.
\nKizaburo refers to Kizaburo Inoue,an excellent stonemason from Bizen \uff08now Okayama Prefecture\uff09 who supervised the construction of the stone walls of Goryokaku Fort and Benten Battery.
\nIn the graveyard there are tombstones for the daughter of Makoto Sugiura,the last administrator of the old Hakodate Government office,and those who died in the Hakodate battle at Goryokaku Fort including officers and men of the new Meiji government and deserters of the old shogunate.<\/p>\n
