The azaleas planted right behind the statue of Commodore Perry are of kind called in Japanese\u00a0Black Ship Azalea. Originated in Northern Asia, it was first introduced to Japan in 1668.
\nThese azaleaa symboize each of Commodore Perrys 5 black ships that visited Hakodate on 17th of May 1854. Macedonian, Vandalia, his flagship Powhatan, Mississippi, and Southampton respectively from the right toward Mt.Hakodateyama.<\/p>\n
