NIJUKKEN ZAKA SLOPE
Once there lived many carpenters and craftsmen around here, and this slope was also called “Daiku machi Zaka” (meaning a slope in a carpenters’town). Hakodate has had numerous disastrous fires and after the great fire of 1879 this slope was designed as a fire prevention belt, and thus was widened by nijukken (about thirty-six meters). This name is thus derived from the width of the slope and has been called such by Hakodate citizens since then.
