二十間坂

かつて、坂上に大工や工人が多く住んでいたことから「大工町坂」とも呼ばれた。函館は大火が多く、明治12年（1879年）の大火後、防火帯としてできた坂で、路幅が二十間（約36m）あるので「二十間坂」と呼ばれた。

NIJUKKEN ZAKA SLOPE
Once there lived many carpenters and craftsmen around here,and this slope was also called “Daiku machi Zaka” （meaning a slope in a carpenters’town）. Hakodate has had numerous disastrous fires and after the great fire of 1879 this slope was designed as a fire prevention belt,and thus was widened by nijukken （about thirty-six meters）. This name is thus derived from the width of the slope and has been called such by Hakodate citizens since then.
